Leaders in Bali are urging the government to provide subsidies for flight tickets in order to make vacations on the island more affordable for international tourists. Recognizing the rising costs faced by airlines, the government has confirmed its plans to introduce new policies to address this issue.
I Nyoman Astama, the Deputy Chairman of the Bali Tourism Industry Association (GIPI), highlighted the importance of subsidized flights in boosting the tourism sector and improving the overall tourist experience. He emphasized the significance of targeting markets with significant numbers of potential tourists.
Flight prices to and from Indonesia’s airports, including the popular I Gusti Ngurah Rai International in Bali, have been steadily increasing. This surge in ticket prices is a cause for concern among industry experts, who fear that it may discourage foreign tourists, particularly from Europe, from visiting Bali.
Astama mentioned that ticket prices have nearly doubled for flights to Europe, making it more challenging for potential visitors to plan their trips. However, the number of Australian tourists visiting Bali remains positive, contributing to the overall foreign tourist trend.
To maintain and increase foreign tourist visits, Astama stressed the need for promotions and collaborations between the government and the tourism industry. Subsidies and incentives can be provided independently or collectively through associations, such as Asita, to stabilize or even boost foreign tourist visits. This, in turn, can lead to sustainable and regenerative tourism, benefiting the government, industry, society, and the environment.
Astama also acknowledged the marketing strategies and budgets of Bali’s main competitors and emphasized the importance of finding effective solutions to attract more foreign tourists to the island.
The Indonesian Minister for Investment and Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, expressed his commitment to reducing flight costs through aviation efficiency measures. Evaluating aircraft operating costs, particularly the Cost Per Block Hour (CBH), is a key step in achieving this goal. Minister Pandjaitan acknowledged that Indonesia’s flight ticket prices are among the highest in the world, second only to Brazil when compared to ASEAN countries and highly populated nations.
